Conversations with Trees: A Biophilic Dialogue Between Nature and Design
Student work exhibited at the Ohio State University Arboretum
The visual communication design students in Dr. Peter Kwok Chan's studio course explored nature as a source of inspiration in their Spring 2020 and Spring 2024 studio courses. Immediately outside their studio at Hayes Hall, the Department of Design, the students could see The Ohio State University's iconic green space, the Oval.
Throughout the semester, guest lecturers joined the class to share interdisciplinary contexts about the oval’s varied tree species. These second year students would come to learn a great deal about the origin, history and character of each tree. Each student selected a tree and began a conversation with it, studying its unique form and developing a deeper understanding of its contribution to our environment. Building on this conversation, each student designed works inspired by what they learned about the emotional, social, political, and ecological background of each tree.
“Conversations with Trees” was developed with support from the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens at Ohio State, the Ohio State Sustainability Institute, Department of English, and Department of Design. Thanks are due to Laura Deeter, Julia Wilson, Mary Maloney, Liz Quigley, Mike Shelton, Peter Chan, Ben McCorkle, Rick Livingston, Taylor Olsen, Mark Celestina, and to all the design students who took part in the project and helped to shape this exhibition.
