I collaborated with Dr. Peter Kwok Chan at the Ohio State University and with the visual communication design students to explored nature as a source of inspiration in Spring 2022 studio course. This effort built on previous interdisciplinary (Graphic Design, Interior Design, English Rhetoric, and Ecology) educational efforts in Spring of 2020.

Throughout the semester, guest lecturers joined the class to share interdisciplinary contexts about the oval’s varied tree species. These second year visual communication students learned a great deal about the origin, history and character of each tree. Each student selected a tree and began a conversation with it, studying its unique form and developing a deeper understanding of its contribution to our environment. Building on this conversation, each student designed works inspired by what they learned about the emotional, social, political, and ecological background of each tree.

In the exhibition designed, the student accordion books designs (2020 and 2022) are hung vertically drawing the eye upwards as would the majestic trees that served as their inspiration. Scans of leaves collected from the Oval inspire the design of the wall graphics that share some of the information presented to the students in the interdisciplinary lectures.

The work was first exhibited at the Kottman Hall near the Chadwick Arboretum to coincide with Arbor Day. The exhibition then traveled to the Hopkins Gallery at Ohio State and again to the Urban Art Space. Most recently, it was the feature of a community exhibition at Ohio State's Marion Campus in The Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery. Each exhibition is an iteration of the student work, with new work being rotated and new technologies, such as VR being used as a tool to explore the nature of the Ohio State Campus.
